Bollywood has rebranded itself in the past few years. From the times when it was a complete contrast between chocolate hero movies with Khans and Kapoors in almost all of them, it has transformed into a cinema of character movies, unconventional story lines, and plots that truly define our generation. Remember how it was almost impossible for the hero to lose. He could fight two dozen armed gangsters with bare hands. Now that has gone out of the window, almost! We had movies like Padmaavat, Toilet – Ek Prem Katha, Hindi Medium, Begum Jaan, and so many more in the past two years alone. The comedy level has improved, the action has become more realistic, and of course the art movies have taken the cake. Bollywood is becoming truly entertaining and fans of the Indian cinema are eagerly waiting to see what this year unfolds for them. So today we will talk about top ten movies of 2019 that you absolutely have to watch!
Ranveer Singh has already become the sweetheart of Indian and Pakistan movie fans, and yet again he has proven that he is totally worth it. You also might have already gotten behind the trending Apna Time Ayega on social media. Yup, it’s the dialogue of our very own Rambo boy. Gully Boy released on Valentine’s Day so there is a high chance you haven’t yet caught the splendid performance by this heartthrob. Khaleej Times however seemed to have already watched the movie, and their review says “Ranveer delivers soul-stirring performance”. Need more reason to watch it? If yes, then here is a bit of a spoiler free start to the movie. It is about a boy who comes from the slums of Sharavi and scribbles poetry in a diary he keeps. He goes through many ups and downs in his journey of self discovery, as his possessive girlfriend – played by Alia Bhatt – share a totally relatable love story on screen. Bonus points to the movie for having extraordinary performances from more than just these two characters.
If you have seen Dhamaal and Double Dhamaal, then you can already expect what a Total Dhamaal will be like. Continuing with the franchise previous funny bombs Ajay Devgan and Arshad Warsi, this third movie in the franchise also added Anil Kapoor and – wait for it – Madhuri Dixit. To be honest, a single song by this dancing queen is enough to bring audiences to their feet, so we can only imagine what a mixed bag of side splitting laughter and heart melting dancing would do to this movie. The baseline of this movie’s comedy is money, whereby Ajay, playing a small time crook Guddu, will get double crossed by his colleague and then madness ensues. As always we are rooting for the two to get the money they are looking for throughout the movie, but to find out if they do, you will have to watch it.
There is not much that we can tell you right now without out rightly spoiling the movie for you, but here is what we can… If you are a fan of dacoit dramas, and love to watch mystery and thrill unfold before your eyes, then this is the perfect movie for you. It is set in 1975 India and comes from the director of Ishqiya and Udta Punjab – Abhishek Chaubey. Abhishek is known to immerse himself in the stories he tells, by visiting places, meeting people, hearing stories, even mastering the dialect needed to tell a story. And if you still need more reasons, then this movie is not going to be a male hero oriented film, despite being set in the era known to favor males.
This entry is dedicated to the sports fans out there and to lend credibility to our choice, this movie was actually directed by a sports journalist – Mithali Ghoshal. This is not your run of the mill story where a sports enthusiast struggles to get his chance for national tryouts and becomes the winning national team captain by the end. This is about a sports agent. And his fall from grace! It talks about the commercial side of sports. And since you already got the reference from the size of a pitch, 22 Yards is about subcontinent’s favorite game – Cricket! The movie had already had its world premiere at Bay Area South Asian Film Festival and the lead actor Barun Sobti also won the Best Actor (Feature) award.
We absolutely adore Kangana Ranaut, especially since we have seen her in movies like Queen and Tanu weds Manu. The star has transformed herself for her every role proving her prowess every single time. Now she appears in a biographical, action-packed movie Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi tracing the life of Rani Lakshmibai. Jhansi ki Rani is frequently used colloquially to describe the attributes of being a diva, being bold and fearless, and also to explain political competence. It all stems from this actual woman in history who played a key role in the 1857 Indian Rebellion, more often remembered as the The War of Independence by the local historians. We will not get into this ‘rebellion Vs independence’ words controversy at this time, but we give a hearty thumbs-up to this movie as definitely landing among the top ten of 2019.
Let’s add a Rom-com to this list as well, after all they remain among the most beloved genre for Hindi movies. A direct but humorous take on the changing cultural values of the youth, this movie is a sweet romantic comedy to keep your heart beating and lips curved. A television reporter, Guddu, falls for a strong and determined woman. He proposed marriage to her, but she being cautious about all her life decisions suggests Live-in instead. Guddu agrees but his traditional family decides to join in the live-in arrangement. The lovers have to navigate between their modern choices and traditional family, and they do so in quite a comic way. You would be rolling in your seats when you see how the lead characters finally decide to get married.
Radhika Apte has taken over Netflix, and it seems now that she is on her way to take over Bollywood now too. Bombairiya is a black comedy movie with a lot of crime and drama in the story. As can be guessed from the name, it is about a bomb. Critics haven’t been kind to the movie, but the audiences have posted all praises in their reviews. The protagonist is a regular macho hero of the Indian movies, as is the case in most crime movies, but his pink scooter and pink helmet definitely paint a different side to the character. This is one of those movies that is likely going to divide the fans on extreme ends with some loving it while other absolutely discarding it as crap. We suggest you find out for yourself.
One name is enough to bring Bollywood fans to the cinemas to watch this movie – Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Little wonder then that those who have watched this movie cannot stop talking about it. The Sacred Games star has movie fans wrapped around his little finger and shows no signs of slowing down. To be honest, we don’t even want him to slow down, considering the phenomenal performances he is giving back to back. We are still not over Gangs of Wasseypur, and Gaitonde is here with another movie drenched in politics and violence. The movie is about Balasaheb Thackery who shaped the Marathi identity and eventually led to Shiv Sena birthing and becoming as we know it today.
Have you ever asked yourself “are you crazy?” especially after you seem to gravitate towards your ex? This is exactly what this movie is about – relationship between exes gone sour. On a separate note, do you remember Kangana Ranaut was set to marry Rajkummar Rao in Queen? Oh well, now in this movie he is her ex. Interesting right? Well this has nothing to do with the actual story, just a coincidence perhaps. This movie is what Bollywood counts as ‘masala black comedy’ which is sure to keep you laughing and curious till the end. No official trailer has been released yet so we will all will have to wait a little longer for now!
Let’s end this list on a sweet little note with this movie about four friends who go their own ways after college but keep their family-like bond despite everything. The story line is soft, relatable and totally nostalgic. The plot of the movie is tailored to the modern youth whereby friends indeed have a family like status, and sometimes they are the only ones we could count on. Three guys and one girl travel through life and have individual experiences, yet nothing is good or bad enough for them to break away from each other. Hum Chaarcomes from the same production company that gave us heart melting movies like Dosti, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Hum Saath Saath Hain, and Vivaah. So you can guess how deeply emotional this movie will leave you as well.
