Bollywood actors are such super humans in movies. The hero can single handedly beat to pulp a whole gang of criminals without even getting a single scar himself. Heroines are following suit these days as well. Do you remember how Saif Ali Khan spun loads of people with bare hands in Race, or how Priyanka Chopra effortlessly held police officers on gun point in Don? In films they are also super cool in face of danger or anger. They smile and say witty things that make us fall in love with them. They just make us believe that they are invincible. However, out of the sets of movies, these celebrities are not as composed as they are seen on camera, and are also far less equipped to do karate or Kung Fu. Instead when they get angry, they shout or make insulting comments. Quite frequently these beloved stars get tangled with journalists during movie promotions or interviews. Let’s look at ten of such incidents where the Khans, the Bachchans, and many others were pushed beyond their composure into saying angry things.
Let’s start with the ruling family of Bollywood. The Shahenshah of Bollywood can make an entire room go silent just with his stare, both on and off camera. Being one of the most senior stars of the Indian film industry, he is naturally respected and adored by his fellow actors as well as the reporters covering the entertainment media industry. Still there have been times when reporters have intentionally or unintentionally rubbed the Baghban star the wrong way. One such instance happened on the 42nd marriage anniversary day of Amitabh, when a reporter asked him how has been his journey. He posed his question like ’Shaadi ka laddu jo khaey woh bhi pachtaye, jo na khay who bhi pachtaye.’ The maestro did not like this, so he counter questioned the journalist whether he is married and how has been his shaadi ka laddu. The reporter did not acknowledge this obvious response and kept pressurizing Amitabh Bachchan to shed details on his married life. The Sholay lead then decided to approach the answer another way, and turned to the other people present and asked with a sarcastic smile, “who brought this man here?” Moral of the story: Rishte mein tow hum tumhare baap hotey hain!
Shah Rukh Khan is perhaps the most media adored personality in Bollywood since the nineties. He has had many quarrels with the media over time, but nothing has been able to dampen his appeal from his fans and even media persons themselves. This is so, perhaps, because he almost always have something sarcastic to say instead of directly insulting those who have offended him.
While promoting Happy New Year, along with Farah Khan, Abishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, encountered a reporter who started his question by saying that Shah Rukh was the oldest among all on the stage. Farah corrected the reporter, but he continued nevertheless. King Khan did not appreciate this and then he answered all questions from that chap with a noticeably sour tone. The questions continued to become lamer and lamer, and when the same person asked Farah why movie stars go abroad every year on New Year’s Eve, Shah Rukh responded with his signature witty style and said, “Whatever you’ve smoked before coming here, give some of that to us too after this event.” Our beloved Badshah did not shout yet his words were enough to zip up the reporter, and win our hearts all over again.
The beautiful former Miss World is not unknown for her snide reactions whenever provoked. She has had the diva image in the industry for a long time, but despite efforts the media worms have yet to find her guilty of snapping back. The adored heroine has stood the test of time as well in her behavior as she has in her looks. In 2009, she became the first Goodwill Ambassador for Smile Train. On the inaugural event of the organization, when reporters continued to flash cameras to take photos of the actress with adorable children, it ended up scaring many small girls. Aishwarya kept asking the photographers to stand a bit farther and control their hustle bustle but they did not listen.
Eventually some children started to cry, and that’s when our beloved Paaro lost her cool. She took a few steps forward and addressed the photographers in a grave tone. “We belong to the industry where you take our pictures and we are used to it, but these children are getting scared because they are not. Stand back, as I have told you many times.” This eventually made the cameramen behave and they stopped their loud rustle bustle. That’s when Aishwarya sat down on her knees, pulled little girls closer to her and they all had a happy photo shoot.
Our beloved Deepu is not only gorgeous outside, but she is also super strong inside. Her love life, career growth, and then super famous marriage with handsome hunk Ranveer Singh has made Deepika face media multiple times, and she has done an amazing job at answering all questions as smoothly and calmly as possible. We all remember how she responded when Karan Johar asked her about her tattoo post her break-up with Ranbir Kapoor. However, the most famous clash that the actress had was after her low-cleavage photo was published by Times of India on Twitter, with the tag-line ‘OMG: Deepika Padukone’s cleavage show!’ Our girl struck back with full force and tweeted in response, “Supposedly India's 'LEADING' newspaper and this is 'NEWS'!!??”, and “Don’t talk about Woman's Empowerment when YOU don't know how to RESPECT Women!” among others. Things did not end here. Another journalist decided to quiz her later and posed her question with words like “reacting on a petty thing.” DP still managed to maintain her cool, but she was clear this time that she is not going to take any publication or reporter disrespecting her. She lashed out at the reporter and addressed the cameras “Can you pan the camera on this lady please? I am already very upset and you are making me more upset”. Arjun Singh, standing beside her, extended his full support to Deepu and told the reporter to shut it.
You were probably wondering up till now why hasn’t this film star showed up in this list. After all, Salman Khan has made a name for himself for being the bad boy of the industry. He has provoked several of his co-stars over the course of his career and has innumerable times to his record when he shouted, fought – if Vivek Oberoi is to be believed, then threatened – his fellow actors. So although we couldn’t keep him out of this hot list, we have chosen a time when he was right in lashing out at the media.
On the eve of Iifa Awards, speaking to the media outside the main function, Salman Khan took the stage to answer questions. A while before this, his brother Sohail Khan had made news for clashing with the media while he was with his father. So when Salman was asked whether he thought Sohail had misbehaved, he responded with a straight “No!” Then he continued to narrate his own experience when he was coming out of the airport and reporters pushed their microphones into his friend’s face. “She pushed the mic, and the reporter asked ‘what’s wrong with you idiot?’ Salman then said, “My father is 80, what if he falls? So if my brother is responding to you, he is concerned for my father, he is not insulting you.” Then he also schooled the reporters on how it can be dangerous for older people to push them. He said that you people are competing against each other and for stupid questions you push them. “It was 12 o’clock at night, they were out for dinner and you ambushed them to ask whether I am getting married or not. And still they stood there nicely.” Our much-loved Prem was absolutely right in this, and considering the number of times multiple movie stars have asked photographers and tabloid people to behave, it is only rational that reporters should maintain their distance and decency while asking questions to these world famous movie stars.
Piggy Chops has made a name for herself all over the world. But even after she has made her entry into Hollywood, Indian film industry continues to be obsessed with her. And if that was not enough, her wedding with the American Singer Nick Jonas really put her on the radar of almost every entertainment news organization all over India. To some people, however, this has not been pleasant, and that includes some tabloids who now wish to take her interviews and comments but of course she’s too busy. You might also remember how her photo on the cover of New York City based Maxim magazine sparked controversy all over internet. After that all happened, when she came back to India, and appeared in a press meet, one person decided to express his anger on her behaving like a superstar. He asked her lame questions like why is she late to events, or why is she still big on Indian media, and how she responded to Maxim controversy. Priyanka visibly got annoyed but she handled the questions really smoothly. “I should come back more often just for you,” the superstar said to the reporter. She was also very cool about his other questions for a while before shutting him up with “Are you the only one who’s going to ask all questions?” Here is the YouTube link for this media skirmish.
These are the basic manners that Indians have to learn. Just because you have a camera does not mean you can take anyone’s picture anytime. Schools and colleges need to teach these basic manners to students,” these are the words that Jaya Bachchan spoke out loud as she gave an interview held in a college. She said to the students multiple times to put their phones down, saying “I hate it.” She has caught on camera innumerable times stopping media persons from pushing microphones into her mouth, or pushing her. “I am claustrophobic,” she has said so on record many times as well. Jaya is known for her low voice and composed demeanor but she is equally renowned for not putting up with aggressive attitude from the Paparazzi.
While promoting her film Daawat-e-Ishq, the young actress was planning on taking a food trip for the promotion of the movie. During a press conference a reporter asked her that she had already been facing criticism with respect to her weight, so does she think that taking a food trip is a good idea for her. The audience laughed at this question, and Parineeti also began her answer with a sweet little smile. Looking stunning in a red dress, she said, “This laughter should be enough to answer your question.” She said that it’s not like that if she is eating, she will not go to the gym later or will not take care of her health otherwise. After answering the question gracefully, she also decided to make it a point that she did not appreciate the question. “I think this is a great way to promote this film and if I put on weight then I will lose it.”
Next comes the junior Bachchan, who is probably less adept at handling media than his father, but is still as quick to respond. You all probably remember how he instantly corrected a reporter on the name of his beloved wife. During promotional interview for his upcoming movie, when a reporter said “Ash is saying…,” Abhi cut him in the middle and almost snapped “Aishwarya!” Didn’t we all just love that?
Another time, as well, when a journalist tried to spew something against Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, he calmly responded with a shut up call. She asked him that there was visible tension between him and his wife so what does he have to say about it, to which he responded “I have nothing to say. You have blown all this out of proportion.” And then he showed her his wedding ring and said with a cheeky smile, “Still married, Sorry!”
The lover boy of the Indian media was asked why he is secretive about his personal life, particularly relationships, even though his cousin-sister Kareena Kapoor has always been open about hers. Ranbir was obviously offended as he began his answer by saying that he couldn’t hear the whole question but he understood what the reporter was trying to ask. Then he took his time to explain that “to each his own,” and if someone in his family believes a certain way of life is correct, it doesn’t mean that he also has to abide by that. Then the heartthrob took a leaf from his movie dialogues and threw it on the reporter, saying “I will take a dialogue from Rajneeti for you, as it said media’s independence cannot become terror for us.”
